Brazil finished the Para Judo World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Sunday (27) in second place overall, with 12 podiums: 3 golds, 5 silvers and 4 bronzes. Ten of those medals came from the individual categories and two from the team events, held on the closing day. China topped the table with 4 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronzes, and host nation Georgia came third.
On the same Sunday, more than 4,000 kilometres away, the Brazilian relay won bronze at the Para Triathlon World Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.
Two team bronzes in Georgia
In the women's bronze-medal tie, Brazil beat Kazakhstan 4-1, with wins for Rebeca Silva, Meg Emmerich, Larissa Silva and Brenda Freitas. The Kazakhs started one point ahead because Brazil had no entry in one of the weight categories.
The men's bronze-medal tie against France ended 3-3 and went to a decider, settled by Deyverson de Souza. Arthur Silva and Dênis Rosa also won their bouts; Felipe Amorim and Thiego Marques were beaten.
What the final table shows
Second place with 12 podiums puts Brazil ahead of traditional powers in Para judo and confirms a pattern the country has sustained through this cycle: medals spread across many categories rather than reliance on one or two names. Even so, the gap with China shows up where it counts most — 3 golds to 4, despite Brazil's 12 podiums against China's 9.
On Saturday (26) Brazil had already had its best individual day of the competition, with three titles, among them Alana Maldonado's, her fourth world championship. The Tbilisi tournament began on 25 September.
Relay bronze in Spain
In Pontevedra, the trio of Jéssica Ferreira (PTWC), Ruiter Silva (PTS5) and Erica Rodrigues (PTS5) took third place in the relay event of the Para Triathlon World Championships.
It was Erica Rodrigues's second medal of the championships: on 26 September she had won silver in the individual race in her class.
