Yankees, White Sox and Padres sweep their Wild Card Series, and only Atlanta still has a game to play

Three of the four best-of-three series ended in two games on September 30. The Phillies forced a decider in Atlanta with a 4-3 win in ten innings.

The best-of-three Wild Card round was designed to produce drama, and in 2026 it mostly produced short work. Three of the four series ended in two games on September 30, leaving a single matchup alive heading into October.

Three sweeps

The Yankees were the most emphatic. New York shut out Boston 9-0 in the opener on September 29 and won 9-2 the next day, outscoring the Red Sox 18-2 across the two games and ending its oldest rivalry's postseason meeting in about forty-eight hours.

The White Sox, the surprise of the regular season, beat Houston 6-3 and then 7-3. Chicago's South Side club had spent the final weekend of the season completing a turnaround that put it in the field at all; it is now the only team in this round to have swept a division winner it was not favored against.

The Padres combined the two patterns: an 8-0 rout of the Cubs in Game 1, then a tighter 4-1 win to finish the job, with Fernando Tatís Jr. the central figure in San Diego's offense.

Atlanta and Philadelphia go to a third game

The one series still standing is the closest. Atlanta took Game 1 by 5-3. Philadelphia answered in Game 2 with a 4-3 win in ten innings, Alec Bohm driving in the decisive run and sending the series to a winner-take-all third game.

That game is scheduled for Thursday, October 1, in the early afternoon in Atlanta. Whoever survives it inherits a short turnaround and the Dodgers.

How the Division Series line up

With three berths settled, the next round is nearly fixed:

  • American League: Yankees vs. Rays; White Sox vs. Guardians
  • National League: Brewers vs. Padres; Dodgers vs. winner of Braves-Phillies

The Division Series start on October 3 in the American League, with the National League games beginning October 3 and 4.

The compressed format cuts both ways. A team that sweeps in two games gets three days off before its next series, which protects a pitching staff; a team that needs three games spends one of them with its best available arms and arrives at the Division Series having already used them. Philadelphia and Atlanta are both about to find out which of those costs more.
