The Academia Brasileira de Cinema (Brazilian Film Academy) on Wednesday (16) chose "Feito Pipa", directed by Allan Deberton, as the film that will seek a nomination for Brazil in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars, the 99th Academy Awards.
The selection
The decision was made by a 15-member committee — 12 elected by the academy's members and 3 appointed by its leadership. The process had two stages: first a list of 15 eligible features, then six finalists.
Besides "Feito Pipa", the final round included:
- "100 Dias", by Carlos Saldanha;
- "A Fabulosa Máquina do Tempo", by Eliza Capai;
- "A Natureza das Coisas Invisíveis", by Rafaela Camelo;
- "Nosso Segredo", by Grace Passô;
- "Vicentina Pede Desculpas", by Gabriel Martins.
The film
The film follows Gugu (Yuri Gomes), a football-mad boy who lives with his grandmother, Dilma (Teca Pereira), in rural Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil. His routine is upended when he may have to move in with his father, Batista, played by Lázaro Ramos.
"Feito Pipa" arrives with a strong festival run. In February, in the Generation Kplus section of the Berlin International Film Festival, it won the youth jury's Crystal Bear and the international jury's Grand Prix. In August it was the most-awarded film at the 54th Gramado Film Festival, taking prizes for direction, actress, supporting actor and the audience jury award.
It opens commercially in Brazil on November 5, distributed by Paris Filmes.
